But Zion stated, “The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me ” Can a mom neglect the child at her breast and don’t have any compassion on the kid she has borne? Though she might neglect, I’ll always remember you! See, I’ve engraved you on the palms of My palms. — Isaiah 49:14-16

In considerably the identical method as God is greater than any and all the names we will title Him, He can also be greater than the pictures our minds conjure of a single gender. Scripture, in displaying us aspects of who God is, typically portrays God in phrases we affiliate with the female gender.
The Hebrew title El Shaddai comes as near capturing this side of God as does any of His names. The conventional translations of Scripture have persistently rendered this title “Almighty.” But to understand its full taste, it is going to be useful to look at its Hebrew roots.1 El is a shortened type of Elohim. It units forth the may, the energy, and the excellence of God. Shad is the Hebrew phrase for “breast.” Shaddai photos God’s fullness or bounty, His tenderness, His generosity, His need to nurture us and make us fruitful. In one title, God’s attributes of may and tenderness are introduced collectively!
When Abram was ninety-9 years outdated, El Shaddai appeared to him and stated, “I have made you a father” (Genesis 17:5). Speaking in strictly human phrases, it takes a lady to go to a person and say, “I’m going to make you a father!” Sometimes this announcement comes as a shock. Often the stunning side of this information is mingled with quite a lot of pleasure and thanksgiving, together with some apprehension. Certainly all of those feelings had been current as El Shaddai’s announcement was acquired.
You will probably be very fruitful — nations and kings will come from you. — Genesis 17:6, paraphrase
It was Elohim Shaddai who gave start to the nation of Israel. The prophet Isaiah described the birthing course of thus:
Like a lady in childbirth I cry out, I gasp and pant. — Isaiah 42:14
Jacob is filled with nervousness as he’s about to ship his beloved son Benjamin off to Egypt in response to the whimsical demand of the ruler who distributed meals.
May [El Shaddai] grant you mercy earlier than the person,” he cries. — Genesis 43:14
Later, as Jacob is announcing God’s blessing on his son Joseph, he says,
Because of the El and the Shaddai, might you could have blessings of the breast and the womb. — Genesis 49:25, paraphrase
Isaiah, in describing the love of God, says it’s larger than that of a nursing mom. A singular bonding happens because the mom holds her little one near her breast. She is the supply of all of the toddler wants for nourishment as she holds the kid near the heat of her physique, inside the sound of her heartbeat and safe within the security of her arms.
An additional dimension to this image is added by the psalmist in Psalm 131. The psalmist seems like a weaned little one. “Why am I being deprived of what, from my point of view, seems so good and so right?” he might have been asking himself. “This is what I need, God. Why can’t I have it?”
Have you ever requested God these types of questions?
God, who, like a mom, is aware of that the rising little one should transfer past breast milk, nonetheless holds the kid shut sufficient to listen to the divine heartbeat, permitting the kid the heat and safety of being held tightly in divine arms.
Children’s questions should be unanswered. But their souls are stilled and quieted “like a weaned child with its mother” (Psalm 131:2), as a result of they know, with none doubt, who’s holding them!
El Shaddai, almighty, tender God, maintain us near Your coronary heart right now.
This historic title exhibits God concurrently mighty and tender. Imagine God’s agency, loving hand in your again proper now, main you with intention and supreme goodwill. Lean into God’s energy and kindness. How does that make you are feeling?
